I think I am having a similar issue... i hit the update link that kicks off update.php, then nothing displays until a redirect happens after a 40 second (ish) timeout. I have checked the error logs, all show nothing, but I did notice I am hammered the ram and cpu to max, my provider it would seem has maxed my RAM at 1G. i may have to investigate more... I feel like Im missing a log file somewhere - cpanel or maybe a linux system log. fun stuff !
